There is no one type of Autism, but there are many ways you can inspire the need for acceptance and inclusivity within the community. By learning about autism, you become part of the positive change that will lead the way to a better and brighter future for neurodivergent people and their families.
What is Autism?
Autism/autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a broad range of conditions that challenge social skills, behaviors, speech, and ways of communicating with others. The environment and genetics can also influence many types of autism.
According to Autism Speaks: “autism is a spectrum disorder. Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. People with autism learn, think, and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.”
According to the CDC, autism affects 1 in 44 children in the U.S. An estimate of 2.21% of adults in the U.S have ASD. Autism is hard to diagnose without a professional evaluation; however, here are a few signs of autism at any age:
- Loss of speech or social skills
- Eye contact avoidance
- The inability of emotional intelligence
- Delayed language development
- Resistance to minor changes like routine and surroundings
- Repetitive behaviors
- Intense reactions to multi-sensory

Knowledge provides acceptance and promotes a better understanding and an inclusive, supportive community. Here are some ways you can help!
- #celebratedifferences make a difference with a simple hashtag on social media when you donate, giving through your insurance policy, vehicle donations, stocks, and more!
- Download digital resources such as PDFs to better spread information
- Visit the numerous organizations and tools local or dear to you
- Send letters to your local school representatives with Autism information
- Raise awareness with your coworkers
- #Runforautism, run/walk for autism in person or virtually!
