Valuable Tips In The Event Of A Storm Or Hurricane

Hurricane season is fast approaching, but before you suffer a significant loss, here are some tips to prepare for an imminent storm or hurricane. In particular, learn tips on how to prepare in case you have to make an insurance claim.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE A STORM

  • Protect your property, especially property that is exposed to damage from wind or flooding.
  • Take an inventory of your belongings and property. You must be able to prove that your items or property are yours. We recommend that an inventory be done at least twice a year.
  • If you have wind shutters, make sure they are tight and secure.
  • Keep your important documents in a sealed plastic bag.
  • Before the storm, take photos of your property and belongings so you can document their existence and value in case you need to make a claim. We suggest it be carried out several times during the policy year, considering that the more up-to-date they are, the more they can help to establish the state of the property prior to the event.
  • Clean drains and any other areas near or on the property that may impede a natural flow of water.
  • Remove electronic equipment from the ground if possible.
  • Know how to turn off electrical power in case you need to in an emergency.
  • Think about your safety. If your area is being evacuated, please leave immediately.
  • Keep water, food, a first aid kit, medicine, flashlights, extra batteries, cleaning supplies, and any other emergency supplies accessible.
  • Document as much as you can, such as:
    • The amount of fuel the generator has.
    • That there are no spills or leaks of water in common areas, ceilings, walls, windows, etc.
    • If there is damaged property prior to the event, document it with photos and deduct it from the claim.
    • Keep track of all valuations made. It is important to keep a physical and electronic copy in a cloud.
    • Keep documents of all appraisals made (keep physical and digital copies).
    • Document all updated insurance policies and endorsements made to them during the policy year.
    • Save all financial documents.
    • Keep handy all important contacts such as: structural engineers who can conduct post-loss estimates, certified electricians and plumbers, accountants, and your insurance agent.
