How Fulcro’s team became known as “Insurance Nerds”

Founded in Puerto Rico in 1981 under the name First Insurance Group – today, Fulcro Insurance is the largest insurance brokerage firm on the island. Made up of a team of 75+ employees located between Puerto Rico, Georgia, and Florida, Team Fulcro prides itself in being the nerdiest of the Insurance Nerds. 

In recent times, the terms “risk” and “uncertainty” have become common vocabulary — with hurricanes, earthquakes, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the ever-growing importance of being prepared for the unexpected, and Fulcro’s team of Insurance Nerds have the experience, skills, education, and specialization to prepare their clients to do just that. 

Helping people and businesses prepare for the unexpected has always been the company’s mission, but it’s also something that truly excites these nerds — when most people might think of insurance as something abstract, complicated, and even boring, Team Fulcro sees an exciting puzzle that can be solved.

Fulcro’s COO and president of US operations, Janyra Pérez Blanco CPCU, highlights that Fulcro’s philosophy has always been that ‘knowledge is power’ and one of the company’s core values. “We are always evaluating risks, reading, discussing policy terminology, and improving our understanding and expertise on highly technical subjects, so we began referring to ourselves as ‘Nerds.’ In the beginning, it was more of an internal joke, but then we realized that being nerdy isn’t a negative thing, it means we are highly technical, analytical, and passionate about insurance,” she said. 

What does it mean to be an Insurance Nerd?

Due to the insurance industry’s many intricacies, emerging risks and constantly changing environment, education is ever more essential. Historically, Fulcro has always believed that education is an integral part of doing business, especially in an industry such as insurance which is highly technical and regulated. Because of this, Fulcro makes it a priority to invest time and money to offer and maintain ongoing internal education programs to their team members — to keep them up to date and sharp in the latest insurance processes, compliances, and management skills. 

And proud nerds they are — with a team made up of members with graduate degrees in Risk Management and Insurance, Surety Bond Producers, Juris Doctorates, CPAs, twenty-six (26) professional designations, and seven candidates of additional professional designations.  

A Focus on Technology 

Of course, being an Insurance Nerd means being tech-savvy. At the core of Fulcro’s main objectives, is offering their clients new and innovative digital tools to enhance the customer service experience. One of their main tech offerings is their ProAccess online portal and mobile application, which allows clients to access and manage all of their active claims and insurance policies online.
